Ecomancy
Ecomancy is a systems-design philosophy for working with ecological complexity by arranging conditions in which living processes, feedback, and recovery perform more of the work. It favors interventions that synchronize with hydrology, succession, decomposition, disturbance, and microclimate rather than optimizing one output at the expense of the larger system.
A design philosophy for working with complex ecological systems
Feng shui and translation
In English, feng shui is often described as Chinese geomancy, a tradition concerned with how landscape, built form, and spatial orientation relate to harmony and "flow." That translation can be confusing because the Chinese words fēng-shuǐ (風水) literally mean "wind-water." The "wind-water" phrase points to forces and flows (air, water, terrain, orientation) rather than the Western divination method typically meant by "geomancy." A more precise way to say it is:
- Literal meaning: wind-water (風水)
- Common English description: Chinese geomancy (a land-and-siting tradition)
Historical meaning of geomancy
In a classical Western usage, geomancy refers to a method of divination by interpreting marks, dots, or figures in soil or sand.
Ecomancy as a coined term
Ecomancy is a coined term (Dylan Montgomery) for a new school of thought:
Ecomancy: interfacing with an impossibly complex system (nature) by using nature itself: its patterns, feedback loops, and self-organizing dynamics, rather than relying on single-outcome, mechanistic tools that tend to disrupt the system being changed.
The core claim
Nature is a complex, adaptive system. If an intervention treats it as a simple machine ("optimize one output, ignore the rest"), it often produces second-order damage: erosion, pest explosions, nutrient leakage, water loss, fragility under drought/flood, or long-run yield instability.
Ecomancy proposes a constraint on method:
- Prefer interventions that synchronize with the environment's own dynamics (infiltration patterns, successional growth, nutrient cycling, predator-prey balance, disturbance-recovery rhythms).
- Avoid interventions that demand the ecosystem behave like a controlled factory process.
Analogy: A wave cannot be engaged effectively by brute force alone; it has to be moved with and used.
What Ecomancy is not
Ecomancy is not a claim of supernatural prediction. It's a systems-design stance: use ecological computation (the system doing the work) rather than external coercion (the manager doing the work).
Ecomancy as an engineering constraint
An "ecomantic" method tends to have the following properties:
- Multi-benefit (one action supports several functions)
- Feedback-aware (designed around observation and adjustment)
- Low external dependency (less need for continual imported inputs)
- Recoverability (does not collapse under a missed step or a bad year)
- Temporal fit (uses seasonal and successional timing, not just calendar time)
Methods that fall within the Ecomancy school of thought
Indigenous agroforestry / food forests (forest gardening; silviculture analogs)
Food forests (also called forest gardens) are multi-story systems that mimic forest structure while producing food and materials. The core design idea is layering:
- Overstory / canopy
- Understory
- Shrub layer
- Herbaceous + ground layer
(Other common descriptions include vines and root crops as additional layers.)
Once established, these systems can reduce "labor" (in the modern sense) by shifting work from constant replanting and soil rebuilding toward:
- perennial growth,
- self-mulching / litter cycling,
- and functional guilds (plants supporting plants).
Companion functions often include nitrogen-fixing species (a general biological mechanism where plants host microbes that convert atmospheric nitrogen into plant-available forms).
Fire as a tool (cultural burning; pruning; pest reduction; understory management)
A key ecomantic insight is that some landscapes evolved with frequent low-intensity fire. Indigenous fire stewardship used burning to shape habitat, improve food resources, and reduce catastrophic fuel loads.
In oak systems specifically, there is evidence and historical documentation that Indigenous groups used burning under oaks to reduce pests and other destructive agents affecting acorn crops. Research on prescribed fire in oak systems also examines reductions in insect infestation under certain conditions.
Ecomancy framing: fire is not "damage," but a patterned disturbance aligned with a system's disturbance-recovery rhythm when applied with context and skill.
Keyline design (water + landform synchronization)
Keyline design is a land-planning approach that uses topography to maximize beneficial use of rainfall and water movement. It identifies a "keyline" related to a valley's keypoint and uses cultivation patterns and earthworks to spread water, slow runoff, and increase infiltration.
Ecomancy framing: instead of forcing water to behave against landform, you use landform geometry to distribute water across a landscape so soil can absorb it.
Hügelkultur (decomposition as infrastructure)
Hügelkultur ("mound culture") builds raised beds from decaying wood and compostable biomass. Advocates claim benefits including improved water retention and soil warming as woody material decomposes and holds moisture.
Ecomancy framing: decomposition is treated as a designed infrastructure: a slow-release sponge and fertility engine that the ecosystem runs for you.
Straw checkerboard (dune stabilization via microstructure)
The straw checkerboard technique stabilizes sand dunes using partially buried straw in a grid. It reduces wind velocity near the surface, traps sand, and supports soil formation through increased organic matter.
Ecomancy framing: the goal is not to "fight the desert" with high-energy machinery, but to introduce a simple physical pattern that changes boundary-layer flow and moisture capture so vegetation can re-establish.
Keeping the concept technically grounded
A technically defensible way to present Ecomancy is:
- Claim: ecosystems are complex adaptive systems
- Design stance: interventions should leverage endogenous processes
- Evidence form: mechanism + measurable indicators + context constraints
Suggested indicators (pick per system)
- infiltration rate / runoff reduction
- ground cover persistence and litter
- soil organic matter trends (time-lagged)
- biodiversity proxies (plant functional diversity, pollinators, predators)
- yield stability and input dependency
- labor/maintenance hours after establishment
Minimal taxonomy
You can classify an "ecomantic" method as one (or more) of:
- Hydrology-synchronizing (e.g., keyline)
- Succession-synchronizing (e.g., food forests)
- Decomposition-synchronizing (e.g., hügelkultur)
- Disturbance-synchronizing (e.g., cultural burning)
- Microclimate-structuring (e.g., straw checkerboards)
This keeps the term grounded: it becomes a lens for organizing ecological techniques by the pattern they synchronize with.
